A packed Air China flight bound for Seoul was forced to make an emergency landing in Shanghai after a lithium battery inside a passenger’s carry-on bag caught fire, filling the cabin with smoke.

The incident occurred aboard Flight CA139, which departed from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport at 9:47 a.m. local time, carrying 160 passengers and crew en route to Incheon International Airport, South Korea.

According to Air China’s official statement on Weibo, “a lithium battery in a passenger’s carry-on luggage stored in the overhead compartment spontaneously ignited.”

The flight crew responded immediately, successfully extinguishing the fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. To ensure safety, the aircraft diverted and made an emergency landing at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
