Emergency in the Sky: Lithium Battery Ignites Mid-Flight

A packed Air China flight bound for Seoul was forced to make an emergency landing in Shanghai after a lithium battery inside a passengerâs carry-on bag caught fire, filling the cabin with smoke.
The incident occurred aboard Flight CA139, which departed from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport at 9:47 a.m. local time, carrying 160 passengers and crew en route to Incheon International Airport, South Korea.
According to Air Chinaâs official statement on Weibo, âa lithium battery in a passengerâs carry-on luggage stored in the overhead compartment spontaneously ignited.â
The flight crew responded immediately, successfully extinguishing the fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. To ensure safety, the aircraft diverted and made an emergency landing at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
Witness Accounts and Onboard Footage
Footage shared on social media showed bright flames and thick smoke billowing from an overhead bin as passengers shouted for help.
Cabin crew members acted swiftlyâtwo attendants ran down the aisle with fire extinguishers, while others urged passengers to stay calm and remain seated.
A passenger later told local media they heard a loud explosion moments before the flames appeared.
A Wake-Up Call: The Hidden Dangers of Lithium Batteries
This incident serves as a serious reminder of the risks associated with lithium batteries, particularly when transported improperly.
Lithium batteriesâfound in devices such as smartphones, power banks, and laptopsâcan overheat, catch fire, or even explode if damaged, short-circuited, or exposed to excessive heat.
That is why strict international air transport regulationsâincluding IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR)âexist to ensure safe handling, packaging, and declaration of lithium batteries before air shipment.
